McDowell Mountain Regional Park, Fort McDowell, Arizona

posted in: Campgrounds 0

We arrived in Arizona early, and the weather was chilly, so we decided to go to Phoenix hoping for a little warmth. We camped in McDowell Mountain Park. We found a small farmers market in Fountain Hills and got excellent tamales and Italian food.
We visited Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter workshop more than twenty years ago and figured it was time for another trip. He designed the buildings, which were constructed by his apprentices. The apprentices also built their own shelters in a separate area of the property, a practice which is continued today by students in the architecture school.

This is the cabaret, used for musical performances and fancy dinners.

Wright was famous for designing furniture to go with his houses. This chair is surprisingly comfortable.

We hiked one of the trails, returning to our campsite past the playground. A large saguaro was irresistible.

Sunrise on our last day at the park was special.
